Violet dreams - Nekomata
for SATB choir and Piano
Non-sense poem by Giulio De Carlo
Have you ever heard about Nekomata? It is a “yōkai”, a supernatural being of Japanese culture.
It looks like a two-tailed cat and, according to legend, it has the power to control the spirits of the dead and everything that is related to darkness.
It is not evil, but it demands a lot of attention, food, and respect. I’ve imagined a kind of journey with Nekomata through the Kingdom of Dreams (intended both as oniric moments and unspeakable desires) and composed a piece full of anxiety and restlessness, using a non-sense language.
This is a piece for SATB with divisi, accompanied by piano. The piece has been performed and recorded by the Choir Euridice (Italy), conducted by Maestro Pierpaolo Scattolin, in Bologna (Italy) in the Easter of 2019.
